Schoolyard to Market is a youth development, entrepreneurship, and gardening program launched in January 2017. We work with three Dar es salaam School District high schools: The……………………………………………………..

Schoolyard to Market students are growing produce and vegetable seedlings in their school gardens and selling them at the farmers market. The students get hands-on experience in the garden and take field trips to the farmers market and local farms. They learn about sustainability and why it’s important, and they eat vegetables out of the garden. They also learn about running a successful business, with advice from local farmers, food entrepreneurs, and other experts. For many of them, selling produce at the market is their first real job opportunity.

Through the program, the youth learn valuable career skills like planning, marketing, and customer service. They gain confidence and take pride in selling the food they’ve produced. They come away not only with the knowledge to grow their own food and with a greater understanding of the food system, but also with a new appreciation for fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Schoolyard to Market booth will be back at the farmers market this fall. Stay tuned for dates!
